Let it Snow: Winter Tips for Uber Drivers
December 28, 2020
Winter can be hard for all drivers, especially if they’re driving for Uber. Fortunately, we’ve collected these tips to help Uber drivers get through winter.

The weather outside is frightful, and that can make driving less than delightful. But if you’re driving for a rideshare service like Uber, you know winter isn’t going to stop you from getting your job done. Fortunately, we’ve collected winter tips for Uber drivers that will not only get you through until the spring thaw but will help you get the most out of the winter doldrums.

Take Care of Your Car

Winter can be rough on our vehicles, and as an Uber driver, your car is your money-maker. Vehicle maintenance is twice as important during the winter. Make sure you don’t neglect to get winter tires, regularly check their pressure, replace windshield wiper and other kinds of fluids, and always keep your gas tank at least half-full.

Winter can also be a rough time for your car from a cosmetic point of view, as passengers get in and out wearing snow-encrusted boots. Although this isn’t as essential as keeping the car running, laying down rubber mats is the easiest way to keep your car floor clean.

Practice Defensive Driving

As an Uber driver, you’re behind the wheel more than the average person. So, chances are you’re more aware of tips for driving in inclement weather than most people. If you’re new to Uber or to driving in areas where it gets cold in the winter, it’s good to review the basics of driving in the snow. Here are principles to keep in mind:

  • Drive slowly.
  • Allow for greater following distance.
  • Don’t drive with your brights on in a blizzard.
  • If your car starts to swerve, turn into the swerve to correct it.
  • Avoid using cruise control.

Be Prepared for Accidents

Even the safest driver is likely to get into accidents in the winter. Learning how to avoid accidents is important, but you should also learn what to do in the event of an accident. As an Uber driver, dealing with a car accident is mostly the same as regular drivers, save for a few extra steps. Keep an emergency kit in your car with things like blankets, flashlights, and water in case you end up stranded at the side of the road.

Adjust for Slow Season

Here’s one last piece of winter Uber driving advice: Even if you’re in an area without snow, midwinter tends to be a slow period for rideshare drivers. Fortunately, rides usually pick up around Valentine’s Day, but you may need to adjust your schedule if you usually don’t drive during peak hours, or take up doing Uber Eats to help augment your income.

Winter is tough for everyone, especially rideshare drivers. But if you know the challenges in advance you’ll be able to meet them head-on and face the snow with a smile.
